Unusually for a Red Sea wreck, the Aida has a well-documented life. Here is the record, and what is still open.
- June 1911Completed at Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire, Nantes (yard no. 454) for the Egyptian Ports & Lighthouses Administration: a 75.1 m lighthouse and buoy tender, 1,426–1,428 GRT, single triple-expansion engine, about 9 knots. Named like earlier ships of the service, which is why some lists call her Aida II.
- October 1941Attacked in the Gulf of Suez during the German air raids that sank the Rosalie Moller. Under way at full speed, she turned at the last moment; the Heinkel He 111 missed, clipped her mast and crashed. Her captain beached her to stop her sinking. Refloated, repaired, and later passed to Egyptian naval service.
- 15 Sep 1957Sent to land personnel and supplies at the Big Brother jetty in heavy weather, with some 157 people aboard. Slammed against the rocks near the jetty, she flooded by the stern. The Norwegian tug Bergehus took 77 people off and the rest were landed on the island. Nobody died.
- The same dayThe abandoned ship drifted north-west along the reef until her bow caught on the northern plateau. Unsupported, the hull tore in two forward of the superstructure; the stern slid down the slope and settled keel-down on a ledge.
- The decades afterWind and waves ground the bow section to fragments on the reef top. The mainmast broke off. Soft coral, sponges and gorgonians covered everything that stayed in the dark.
- TodayInside the Brothers Marine Park (protected since 1983). Liveaboard access only; permits and mooring time are set by the Navy. Usually dived as a separate profile from the Numidia, a hundred metres away.
- Still openSome accounts place "the engine" on the reef top at 7 m, others put the engine room at 50–55 m in the stern section. Was the ship's cargo anything more than stores? And where exactly does the break sit today: 25 m, 30 m or 33 m? A current depth log would settle it.
Everything in this list comes from published dive-site accounts and the Red Sea Wreck Project record. It drives the model's depth, attitude and layout.

No plans, survey or photogrammetry set of the Aida is published, so the geometry is an informed reconstruction of a 1911 steam tender, built to fit the documented depths and features. Correct it against your own footage. Switch on Accuracy to see which parts are confirmed.
Assumed
- Hull: 75.1 m length, 9.7 m beam and about 7 m moulded depth, counter stern, raised poop. Only the aft 45 m survive; the break is placed just forward of the central superstructure, where the accounts put it.
- Attitude: keel-down on a slope of about 48°, with a slight list to port. That puts the break at roughly 25 m at its shallowest and the propeller at about 62 m, inside the documented ranges. Both depths are model-derived.
- Layout: poop with the emergency helm, engine-room skylight and funnel above the engine, two cargo hatches with winches on the quarterdeck, the deckhouse with a bridge and port gangway forward of them. Wooden quarterdeck planking is gone, leaving the beams.
- The mainmast is shown as a stump with the fallen spar beside it. The funnel is shown standing: no account says whether it still does.
- The reef-top machinery and plates at 7 m stand for the "engine and last of the bow" that the accounts describe there; their shape is illustrative.
- The slope angle, the ledge below the stern, the reef bommies and all coral positions are illustrative.
How it's rendered
- Water absorbs red light fastest, then green, then blue. The shader applies that per channel along both the sunlight's path down and your line of sight, which is why the deep part of this wreck is almost monochrome. Switch on the torch to see the colour the accounts talk about.
- Moving caustics, light shafts, marine snow, ambient occlusion and bloom. Growth, rust and sand ripples are generated per pixel from world position. Turn off Cinematic on slower devices.
What would sharpen it
- A steady lap of the stern section at 2–3 m standoff on a technical dive, plus a few measured distances (break to funnel, hatch length, stern to helm). That is enough for photogrammetry in Metashape, RealityCapture or Polycam.
- A compass heading along the keel, and a depth at the break, the quarterdeck, the helm and the propeller.
- Builder's plans or a Lloyd's Register entry for the 1911 Aida to fix the deckhouse and the position of the funnel and masts.
