Nobody has written this ship's history. What follows is what the reef and the dive accounts tell us, and what a boiler can tell us on its own.
- About 1870–1910A small iron or steel steamer, coal-fired, with boilers of the Scotch type: the standard marine boiler from the 1870s until oil took over. Her size, flag and name are not recorded in any published source.
- Over a century agoShe hit the reef and went down on the slope on her starboard side, bow up in the shallows and stern deep. The guides say only that she "has most probably been down for over 100 years". Jeddah was a busy port for pilgrim and cargo steamers, and the outer reefs north of the city have taken many of them.
- The decades afterThe swell did the rest. The thin hull plating broke up, the deck and superstructure went, and most of the wreck became a scatter of plates on the reef. The two boilers, the heaviest and strongest pieces aboard, stayed whole, and a section of the stern survived in the deeper, calmer water.
- TodayOne of the standard Jeddah day-boat sites, listed as number 48 on local charts and often called the best dive in the city. Open-water divers can do the wreck; the wall to the west, the caverns and the tunnel into the 5 m pool make it a full dive for advanced divers.
- Still openHer name and the date she was lost. A measured boiler diameter and length would date her more closely, and a builder's plate on a boiler would open up the ship registers. Also open: her exact position, her heading on the reef, and whether the piece at the stern still carries a rudder.
Everything in this list comes from published dive-site descriptions. Very little is written about this ship, and no source found gives her name, flag, size or the date she was lost.
- Site
- Abu Madafi Reef, on the outer reefs north of Jeddah, listed as site 48 on local dive charts. About half an hour by boat from the coast. Often called the best dive off Jeddah, and by some the best in Saudi Arabia. One magazine places it near Yanbu with a 60 ft (18 m) maximum; every other source says Jeddah.
- Ship
- A coal-fired steamship that "has most probably been down for over 100 years". Her name and history are not recorded.
- Attitude
- Lying on her starboard side, at about 18 m at the deep end.
- Remains
- Wave surge has broken up most of the hull. Little is left intact except a small section of the stern and the two boilers the site is named after. The propeller (screw) can still be seen. The broken hull is covered in abundant, varied coral.
- Depths
- The wreck runs from about 18 m at the stern to less than 3 m at the bow. About 50 m west, a shelf wall drops to 45 m. Caverns and gullies cut through the reef at 3–6 m, and a tunnel leads into an open pool 5 m deep, lit from above.
- Life
- A resident moray eel. Sea fans about 1 m across, black coral bushes with crustaceans, and pink and scarlet soft corals on the wall. Sharks, manta rays, bonito, bluefin jacks and kingfish are reported. Dolphins are reported at the reef.
- Divers
- Open-water divers can dive the wreck. The wall is for advanced divers. Current and surge can be strong, especially in the shallow caves. Take a light, because the colours are lost at depth. The usual route is to go down in open water off the wall, come up past the screw to the bow, and finish in the caves.
No plans, survey or photogrammetry were used. The ship is rebuilt as a typical small coal-fired cargo steamer of about 1880–1910, broken up as the sources describe and laid on a reef slope that matches the published depths. Check it against your own footage. Switch on Accuracy to see which parts are confirmed.
Assumed
- Hull: 58 m × 9 m, with a counter stern, a single four-bladed screw in an aperture ahead of the rudder, a straight stem and a short forecastle. Her real size is not recorded.
- Attitude: rolled 80° onto the starboard side and lying up the reef slope at about 14°, stern deep and bow shallow. That puts the propeller at about 18 m and the top of the bow at about 3 m.
- Between stern and bow the hull has collapsed flat. The starboard plating lies on the reef, and frames stand up where the port side has fallen away. Which plates are missing is invented.
- Boilers: two Scotch return-tube boilers about 3.8 m across and 3.4 m long, each with three furnaces. They sit side by side on the reef where the boiler room was. Their real size and exact placement are not recorded.
- A fallen engine block, the propeller shaft and the thrust block are added between the boilers and the stern. The sources do not mention the engine.
- The reef slope, the wall's shape, the gullies, the tunnel and the pool are illustrative. They match the published depths but not the real layout or headings.
Dive mode
- The guided dive goes down the wall to about 36 m, which is within recreational limits. Sources describe the wall going to 45 m. The dive then comes up past the propeller, the boilers and the bow, goes through the tunnel, and does the safety stop in the pool.
- The dive computer's no-decompression limit uses the recreational air table and a simple nitrogen-loading estimate. Gas use assumes a 12 L tank and 15 L/min surface consumption. It is for immersion only. Never plan a real dive with it.
- Exhaled bubbles rise and grow as they rise. Sound is a recorded underwater ambience loop, and exhaled bubbles follow its breathing. Swell surge is felt in the shallows and fades by about 8 m.
How it's rendered
- Water absorbs red light fastest, then green, then blue. The shader applies that per channel along both the sunlight's path down and your line of sight. The bow and the pool stay warm and bright, and the wall at 36 m turns blue. The torch brings colour back up close.
- Moving caustics, light shafts, marine snow, ambient occlusion and bloom. Growth, rust, rivets and sand ripples are generated per pixel from position. Turn off Cinematic on slower devices.
What would sharpen it
- Her name. A plate, a bell, or a builder's mark on the boilers would open up the ship registers.
- Measured boiler diameter and length, the number of furnaces, and the propeller diameter. These would fix the ship's size and age.
- A slow video lap of the stern, the boilers and the bow, plus the compass heading of the wreck line. That is enough for photogrammetry.
