Taiyong is the rare Aqaba wreck that nobody meant divers to find. This is the record in order, and what is still open.
- 1974The Aqaba port authority buys a towed crane barge for offloading ships calling at the port: a flat deck, two holds, a wheelhouse at the stern under a massive A-frame with a long lattice jib. Her name, Taiyong, is said to mean Sunrise; her hull number C486B is painted on the transom. Where she was built and under what flag is not recorded.
- 1990sDuring a lift the jib is dropped by accident and comes down through the hold, holing the inner hull. The hole is plugged with concrete. The plug keeps leaking, and with the barge ageing the repair is judged uneconomic.
- 1999She is scuttled off the Japanese Gardens on Aqaba’s South Beach. One account dates it to New Year’s Eve 1999, which would make her a millennium wreck; others say late 1999, or somewhere between 1997 and 1999. She settles on her starboard side on the slope at 35–57 m, too deep for the recreational dive trade, and is forgotten.
- 2004A Jordanian technical dive team, Dive Aqaba’s tec divers, come across a huge barge-like bow upended on its side during a deep dive off the Japanese Gardens, follow the hull to the stern and read TAIYONG C486B on the transom. The wreck becomes Aqaba’s technical training site.
- SinceThe A-frame and the jib grow a garden of soft coral, black coral and gorgonians; large sponges found nowhere else in the area settle on the hull; fusiliers patrol her and lionfish hunt the glassfish in her wires. Divernet’s diver notes the jib tilting inward and wonders whether it will one day pull the wreck over. Al Shorouk, scuttled nearby in 2018 at a similar depth, gives her a neighbour.
- Still openHer length and beam; where she was built; the exact date of the scuttling; the true heading and which way the jib lies; whether there is a mooring line (one centre says yes, two say no); and a set of dive-computer depths at the rail, the wheelhouse, the sand and the jib head. One technical dive with a camera and a tape would settle most of it.

The model is built from the dive-centre descriptions and the published depths, not from plans, photographs or a survey. Accuracy shows the parts the accounts describe in green, the additions in amber, and the scenery in coral. Correct it against your own dive.
From the accounts
- A flat-decked towed crane barge, taken here as 52 m long, 12 m beam and 3.8 m deep in the hull. The length is chosen so that a 30 m jib, the 35 m top, the 50 m sand and the 57 m jib head all fit on one slope; nobody has published the real figures.
- On her starboard side, rolled about 80° so the deck stands nearly vertical, pitched to lie along the slope with the bow up toward the reef. That puts the port rail at the bow at – m, the hatches at – m, the sand at the hull at – m.
- Wheelhouse on an accommodation block at the stern, open window to window, top at – m; the A-frame above it, apex at – m (on her side it reaches out over the sand, not up).
- The jib: a two-chord lattice boom 30 m long, hinged at the A-frame foot, fallen outward across the deck side and lying down the slope with its head on the sand at – m. Topping wires hang slack from the A-frame head to the jib head.
- Two open holds with coamings, a bulkhead between them with an opening at the top, the hole and the concrete plug in the aft hold; hoist and cargo winches, cable drums and a pipe rack on the aft deck; two large winches, bitts and chain on the bow; truck tyres along the bulwark and on the house.
- Life named in the accounts: fusiliers, glassfish, large lionfish, soft corals, black coral, gorgonians, large sponges. Groupers, jacks, morays, barracuda and anthias are typical of the depth and the area and were added for the dive; none is a documented sighting here.
Assumed
- The slope: about 6° under the hull, steepening into the reef east of the bow; the Japanese Gardens are drawn as a schematic coral slope from 20 m up to 5 m.
- Heading: bow east, deck facing south, jib running south-west. One listing says she faces the shore east; the rest is a guess.
- The mooring line to the wheelhouse is drawn because one centre describes it; two others deny it. It is coral in Accuracy.
- Bulwark, bollards, fairleads, anchor and chain, mast, exhaust, searchlight, bridge wing, console and wheel, hold frames: added from the type of vessel. Amber in Accuracy.
Dive mode
- The guided dive goes to the deepest point first and works back up, as a decompression plan prefers; the centres usually run it bow first. The decompression stops over the reef are placed for the story, not planned.
- The dive computer shows trimix 21/20 but its no-stop figures come from the recreational air table, so it drops into DECO within minutes at the jib head, as it should. Gas use assumes twin 12 L cylinders and 15 L/min surface consumption. It is for immersion only. Never plan a real dive with it.
- Exhaled bubbles rise and grow as they rise. Sound is a recorded underwater ambience loop, and the bubbles follow its breathing.
How it’s rendered
- Water absorbs red light fastest, then green, then blue. At 50 m there is little colour left: the shader applies the loss per channel along the sunlight’s path down and along your line of sight, and the torch is the only way to see the soft coral in colour.
- Moving caustics, light shafts, marine snow, ambient occlusion and bloom. Growth, rust and sand ripples are generated per pixel from position, so detail holds up close. Turn off Cinematic on slower devices.
What would sharpen it
- A tape or a known-length reference along the deck for the length and beam
- Dive-computer depths at the bow rail, the wheelhouse roof, the hatch coamings, the sand at the hull and the jib head
- A compass heading along the keel and the bearing of the jib from the stern
- Whether a mooring line is tied to her today, and where
- A slow lap of the A-frame, the jib and the wheelhouse on video at 2–3 m: enough for photogrammetry, which at this depth would be a first for an Aqaba wreck
The Aqaba dive centres and two dive magazines describe this wreck in some detail, and their accounts agree on the history and the depths. No photographs, plans or survey were used; the model is built from the written descriptions. Searched in October 2026.
